Rev. Jacki BelileMany churches across the Body of Christ celebrate a “Rally Day” near the beginning of the program year, with the end of summer and routine programs resuming. At Eden historically it has a very clear focus on our children and youth Christian Education opportunities. (This will be more subtle Sunday, and interwoven into activities of coming weeks.)

In recent years this wonderful focus has shifted to a more inter-generational message, as we all celebrate the LABORS OF LOVE and our common need for growth. This is expressed in our faith education efforts, but also in all the ways we live our lives spiritually in and from this place. We’re also always mindful – ever the more this year – of the unique needs of students and teachers as we launch each year together.

So, let’s think about what “rally” might mean in our context. Webster’s Dictionary defines “rally” as:

1) a verb “to draw or call together for a common purpose”
2) a noun meaning “a renewal of energy in joint action”

May it be that because we gather THIS SUNDAY by Zoom and by Bod (yes, I just made that up), we will feel the renewing touch of connection and common purpose. This year’s purpose will surely not be what we planned a year ago… we turn our attention to community care and resilience, to managing new needs and sorting through the chaos around us, to being present to each other in new ways, to discernment and diligence for our Capital Campaign.

As I think about these things in recent days, I think that all of these things point to our identity as disciples and community. Who are we in the mess of these times? What is our anchor? WHO is our anchor? By remembering who and whose we are, we can rediscover the strength and purpose our God intends for any difficulty. Including all that we face as we RALLY together this weekend!
