A clergy friend of mine taught me this, a word he always says when presiding at the Communion table. “All that is required of you is that you come hungry.”
Oh that we would abide in that invitation. To know our hunger and feel our need. For saving mercy and grace of Christ for sure.
And, that we would be hungry for righteousness (Blessed are they who do so, says Christ in the Sermon on the Mount).
Hungry for wisdom and understanding (as Proverbs says… Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding. (NIV))
Hungry for real relationships of reconciliation (as 2 Corinthians says, this is the gift of our mission in Christ).
This is on my mind as we prepare for our “remote” communion, connected in the Spirit. If you are led to partake, please dedicate some bread and wine or juice at home for Sunday morning. Don’t forget that we would be glad to deliver the wafer and wine/juice from church if you need. (Please call me to arrange this by 3:00 p.m. Saturday if you want to prepare for Sunday morning.)
I’m hungry, with you!
